Monty Panesar’s Bold Opinion on Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement: Points Out Unresolved Weaknesses

Prior to the major England tour, Monty Panesar has made a daring statement regarding Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket. Kohli's weakness outside off-stump was highlighted by the former spinner, who also speculated that it may be the cause of his significant choice to avoid playing England at a time when his Test career was at a low point. On the Australian tour, in the last test series before his retirement, the Indian batting genius had a difficult time, scoring a hundred in the first game but then struggling in the others. The Aussie pacers took advantage of his persistent difficulties hitting the ball outside the off-stump since he was unable to resolve them.

In 2014, Kohli's trip to England was forgettable; it was the first time that the world saw how easily he could be caught out outside the off-stump. But in the 2018 trip, he altered his strategy and put on a fantastic comeback to compete against James Anderson and his teammates.

His challenges outside the off-stump have resurfaced in the last several years, causing his performance to suffer and lowering his Test average to under 50.

Kohli would have had a harder time handling the moving ball around the off-stump than during his prior visits to England, according to Panesar, who played 50 Tests and contributed to England's victory in an uncommon Test series in India in 2012.

"With Kohli, what has happened is that he was struggling against the ball outside the off stump, the fifth stump line, especially in Australia on fast bouncy pitches," the left-arm spinner told PTI.

In England, where the swing is likely to be far greater, he probably hasn't figured out solutions in that area of uncertainty.

"And I think that's probably been one of the reasons why he thought to retire and devote all his attention to RCB and ODI cricket for India."

But Kohli, a former English spinner, was lauded for his brilliant Test career, with the explanation that his retirement was probably motivated by a desire to open up chances for the upcoming generation.

"In every aspect of the game, I believe he has performed admirably as a cricketer. He has served as a fantastic spokesman for Test cricket. He probably believes that he has given it his all, accomplished everything, and that it is now the time for the younger generation to take charge, he said.

It would be much more challenging for Kohli to replicate the same performances he had in 2018

Kohli was able to rebound effectively in 2018, according to Panesar, but at this point in his career, a similar comeback would be considerably harder.

Kohli would find it far more difficult to replicate his 2018 performances. The plain reality is that he has been having trouble with that ball outside off stump for the last 12–18 months. You know, he has that issue on fourth and fifth stump for which he hasn't found a fix.

Panesar, who is providing commentary for the Saurashtra Pro T20 League, said, "So he's thinking it's better for Indian cricket to give youngsters a go and hopefully find the next superstar."
