Mika Zibanejad Trade: Why Letting Go of the Swedish Star Won’t Be Easy for the Rangers

After nine seasons, the New York Rangers and Mika Zibanejad may be separating, with the Swedish center possibly being another major deal for the club.

This follows Chris Kreider's departure to the Anaheim Ducks and Madison Square Garden.

It would definitely be difficult for the center to find a new club, even if the Athletic said that both the Rangers and Mika Zibanejad may have already talked about the possible transfer. And there is a good explanation for it.

Why won't it be easy for the New York Rangers to trade Mika Zibanejad?

Despite having scored just 20 goals this season—his lowest total since his rookie year in 2016-17—the New York Rangers may have some trouble trading Mika Zibanejad. The challenge arises from the fact that he still has five years remaining on his contract. In addition, he has a total no-move provision for the following four years. A revised no-trade provision is included in the last year of his contract, 2029-30.

For most clubs, the average yearly value impact of $8.5 million is a significant sum to absorb.

Chris Kreider's contract also included a no-trade clause, but he waived it to play for Anaheim, a club that featured many of his old teammates and Joel Quenneville, the former Stanley Cup-winning coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.

It’s hard to predict if Mika Zibanejad will do the same, but for the time being, the Ducks appear to be the only club he could do it with.

The Swedish center was especially affected by his departure, and Kreider and Zibanejad are known to be close friends.

In his farewell message on Instagram, Zibanejad wrote, "You took me in from Day 1. You've taught me everything in what it means to be a Ranger." He continued, "You've always had my back no matter what. From being kids to having kids of our own, it's a journey that doesn't end here." Teammates or not, this is a friendship that will last a lifetime.
