Michael Atherton Fears Major Injury Blow for Pant

Former England captain Michael Atherton expresses grave concerns for India, as the situation has become clouded with "uncertainty" following Rishabh Pant's injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Pant had to retire hurt before India concluded the day at 264/4.
The incident transpired in the final hour of play when Pant attempted a reverse sweep against an overpitched delivery from Chris Woakes. England appealed for LBW, but replays revealed an inside edge before the ball made contact with his right foot.
Pant, who had made a quick 37 runs off 48 balls, was seen limping in evident pain before collapsing to the ground, which necessitated immediate medical assistance. He was taken off the field and transported to the hospital for scans, with the medical team of the squad now overseeing his recovery.
In an interview with Sky Cricket at stumps, Atherton remarked that the injury appeared to be serious. He expressed concern that if Pant is deemed unfit to continue in the match — or worse, the series — it could significantly impact India's prospects.

"If he is out of the game...if he's out of the series, then that's a massive blow to India and puts the day in a different light. That 264 for four becomes 264 for five, and with the new ball approaching, there is a possibility of dismissing India quite swiftly tomorrow. However, if he is able to return to bat, he could alter the course of the game. Thus, there exists an uncertainty that remains unknown. Yet, it appeared to be quite a serious injury, as one does not get carted off otherwise," he stated.
Sai Sudharsan, who achieved his first Test fifty upon his return to the playing XI for the crucial Test match, stated that the team would receive an official update regarding Pant the following morning. He mentioned that the remaining players are prepared to step up should the vice-captain be unable to continue his innings.
"He was certainly in considerable pain, but they have opted for scans. We will likely receive information overnight, probably by tomorrow. Clearly, he will be a significant loss, as he was performing exceptionally well today, and additionally, we will be short a batter. If he is unable to return, it will undoubtedly have repercussions. However, the current batters and several all-rounders are ready to contribute. We will strive to perform our best and bat for an extended period to effectively manage that loss," he remarked during the press conference at the conclusion of the day's play.
India navigated the opening session without losing a wicket, only to see three batters dismissed just before tea. Woakes concluded the 94-run opening partnership by dismissing KL Rahul, while Liam Dawson, making his first Test appearance since 2017, took the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal. England's captain Ben Stokes then dismissed his Indian counterpart Shubman Gill, before returning in the final session to claim his second wicket - Sudharsan.
