Who is Mark Carens?

Carens started playing golf as a teenager in Wellesley, Massachusetts. His enthusiasm increased while traveling with his father to the top courses in Ireland and Scotland. He won the Boston Open in 1993 and 1995 while competing professionally, but after participating in mini-tours, he stopped playing about 2000 at the age of 30.

Carens began caddying in 2002 on the Korn Ferry Tour before moving to the PGA Tour. He has collaborated with athletes such as Jonathan Byrd, Morgan Hoffmann, Brendon Todd, Si Woo Kim, who won the Players Championship in 2017, Bubba Watson, and Aaron Baddeley.

Collaboration with Spaun

The golfer's victory at the 2022 Valero Texas Open was made possible by Mark Carens' decision to join Spaun in April 2021. At the 2025 Players Championship, where Carens advised Spaun to "Let's stay in the moment," helping him to push a playoff with Rory McIlroy, their chemistry was apparent.

Caddie Share: The standard caddie payment is 10% for a victory, 7% for a top-10 finish, and 5% for any other cuts made. Carens received $430,000 (10% of $4.3 million) as Spaun's caddie for the victory.

Further Context: The 2023 reported earnings of Carens included a $120,000 base salary and $154,800 from Spaun's on-course activity, for a total of more than $274,800 yearly.
