Magnus Carlsen Critiques D Gukesh’s Norway Chess Run: “He’s on Track, But Not Ahead”
6 months ago | 5 Views
The last day of Norway Chess 2025, which concluded on Friday, was full of spectacular drama. Magnus Carlsen and Arjun Erigaisi played to a tie, and then Magnus took the championship when Fabiano Caruana beat D Gukesh.
In an effort to make a comeback, Gukesh committed a huge mistake during a time crunch, which resulted in a heartbreaking defeat against Caruana. The Indian GM required a victory. With 16 points, Carlsen won the event, followed by Caruana in second place with 15.5 points. Gukesh is presently ranked third with 14.5 points.

Magnus Carlsen's remarks after the game
"I feel great," Carlsen stated in an interview with ANI following the competition. Winning the competition is a relief. Ultimately, though, it was such a rollercoaster, but it's positive.
"They are all very good (Gukesh and Arjun), but they still need a little bit of time to prepare," he said when giving his opinion on Gukesh and Arjun. Pragg (R Praggnanandhaa) and Aravindh Chithambaram played outstanding chess in Armenia, where we are also holding a concurrent tournament. The game against Gukesh stands out as a memorable moment, even though it wasn't a pleasant one.
Carlsen, however, also informed Chess24 that Gukesh is not ahead of other top chess GMs. "Gukesh showed in this tournament he's on track, he's doing fantastic, but he's not ahead of track," he said.
Carlsen also spoke to the next generation. “I felt I generally played the best chess, but stumbling over the finish line, winning by half a point after a lot of results go my way…” he said.
"I feel I am much better than the youngsters in some aspects of the game... In general, I believe I can outplay the children, which makes me feel good!"
Even though he didn't win the championship, Gukesh will still benefit greatly from the event, during which he also earned his first classical victory over Carlsen in Round 6.
