Lois Boisson Responds to Harriet Dart’s Strange ‘Deodorant’ Comment Amid Fan Backlash

Lois Boisson has spoken out about British tennis player Harriet Dart’s on-court comments, which implied that the French player "needed deodorant." The incident happened during a strange match in April at the Rouen Open in France. Dart was down 6-0 in the first set and was halfway through the second set against the local favorite. During the match, microphones caught Dart asking the umpire to tell her opponent to wear deodorant, saying she was "smelling really bad." Dart then lost the match in straight sets.
She later apologized, saying the comment was a mistake made in the heat of the moment. Boisson stayed mostly quiet after the incident, only joking about it when social media blew up with comments. She even asked cosmetics company Dove to sponsor her. Fans quickly called for Dart to apologize, calling her "disrespectful" and saying she should be "suspended." Boisson shared her honest thoughts on the matter Sunday, as she prepared for her fourth-round match at the French Open.
She said it was no big deal for her and that she just made a joke after the mistake. Boisson said she didn’t hear the comment during the match and only learned about it two hours later. She insisted it didn’t upset her at all. Boisson hopes to stay calm when she faces third seed Jessica Pegula on Monday at Roland-Garros' Court Philippe-Chatrier. This is her first time reaching this stage of a Grand Slam. She missed last year's French Open due to an ACL injury but returned to the tour in 2025.
