George Russell's victory at the Canadian Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton fall short of a podium spot in Montreal. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen finished second, and Mercedes' AK Antonelli took third. In contrast, Ferrari's Hamilton finished sixth and was devastated to learn after the race that he had struck a groundhog.

Hamilton stated that the event likely occurred between Lap 12 and 13 and caused vehicle damage as well. Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal, where the Circuit Giles Villeneuve is situated, has a big population of groundhogs. Several media outlets claim that Hamilton's car killed the groundhog, which is a member of the marmot family of large ground squirrels, as it ran over the animal.

Lewis Hamilton killing a groundhog is captured on film:

The Brit described his race start as "good" and his optimistic attitude as he "held position," "held onto the group," and "managed tyres well" in an interview with Sky Sports.

"I didn't see it happen, but I heard that I hit a groundhog afterwards."

"That's heartbreaking; I adore animals, and that's extremely, extremely unfortunate. I've never experienced that here before.

"But the floor—the right side—has a hole in it, and all the vanes are missing."

Hamilton fell from fifth to seventh place, confirming that his vehicle was damaged underneath. After Lando Norris withdrew because of a collision, he ultimately placed sixth.

The British driver disclosed that Hamilton's vehicle had problems later. He stated, "Considering that, we had a brake issue halfway through as well, we stayed out probably too long after the first stop, and we came out behind traffic, and it just went from one thing to another."

"I'm glad I could just complete it, particularly given the brake problem I had.

“We're really in need of an upgrade, and there are a lot of things that need to change before we can fight at the front,” he added.
