Kuldeep Yadav Selection a No-Brainer, Gambhir and Gill Get Clear Message

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke told Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill to choose Kuldeep Yadav for the remaining games following India's defeat in the Headingley Test against England, arguing that the choice was a no-brainer. The hosts chased down 371 in the series opener to take a 1-0 lead, as Shubman Gill and company lost by five wickets.

India entered the Headingley Test with one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja. But the left-arm spinner was ineffective and only managed to get one wicket. The seasoned campaigner Jadeja made no attempt to exploit the rough in front of the left-handed batsmen.

He continued to reverse-sweep him. As he sent Ben Stokes out in the last session, Jadeja really came into his own. But by then, the horse had already run, and England went on to score a well-known victory, with Joe Root and Jamie Smith remaining undefeated.

In Clarke's view, playing Kuldeep is the need of the moment. As the 2015 World Cup-winning captain put it, he is a true wicket-taker who doesn't depend too much on the pitch's support.

"In terms of bowling, I don't want to be harsh on anyone, but I believe they need to play Kuldeep Yadav. In my opinion, it's a no-brainer. On the Beyond23 Podcast, Clarke stated that he believes he is a wicket-taker and would have provided far more than what he observed the attack accomplish in this Test.

"India has been doing this for some time. They are prepared to take the chance of selecting the best spinner in order to focus on additional batting or maximizing the batting depth. "I believe you must aim for 20 wickets to win in England," Clarke said.

Ways must be found to counter Indian attacks.

Clarke also urged Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to step up because Jasprit Bumrah can't handle the majority of the workload every time. In the first innings, Bumrah took five wickets, but in the second, he was unable to take any.

As Siraj and Prasidh continued to serve up poor balls, England were able to seize control of the game.

"Bumrah is a star, leading that assault." The other three pacers did bowl well at times, but they still need to improve their wicket-taking strategies, have more options, and perhaps improve their performance, according to Clarke.

“Jadeja didn’t have the impact that I thought he might have. I thought there was a lot of rough to the left-hander, especially in the second innings. In my opinion, he bowled a little bit straight, Clarke said.

Edgbaston will host the second Test between India and England starting on Wednesday, July 2.
