Kevin Durant Trade: Suns & Rockets Benefit, Spurs and Heat Come Up Short
5 months ago | 5 Views
In a blockbuster transaction, Kevin Durant was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets for eight players, according to several sources on Sunday. The Suns have traded for the 10th overall selection in Wednesday's NBA Draft, five potential second-round picks, star guard Jalen Green, and swingman Dillon Brooks.
Durant will now team up with a youthful Houston team led by coach Ime Udoka that finished 52-30, second in the Western Conference after Oklahoma City, the overall NBA champion.
The winners and losers in this massive agreement are listed below.

Winners
Phoenix Suns: By offloading Durant's deal, the Suns gained much-needed flexibility. The owner, Mat Ishbia, has the ability to rebuild a team that performed below expectations in recent playoffs thanks to three first-round picks, including the No. 10 in 2025, and eight potential second-round selections. If Devin Booker moves forward with a trade, Jalen Green may take his place. After years of postseason difficulties, trading Durant allows for a new beginning, despite his outstanding production (27.1 points per game in 2024–25).
Houston Rockets: By adding Durant to a budding roster under coach Ime Udoka, the Rockets jumped into championship contention. Durant's two-time Finals MVP scoring ability complements Alperen Sengun's playmaking, making for a formidable partnership. Durant's experience in high-stakes games will be invaluable to young players like Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr. With Durant's clutch scoring, Houston's physical, defense-first style, already a top-10 unit, might rule the West and position them for a deep playoff run.
Losers
Miami Heat: Pat Riley's failure to acquire Durant leaves the Heat without a star player to lead their team, forcing a shift to either lower trade prospects or a rebuilding year to free up salary room for 2026. After Jimmy Butler was traded to Golden State, Miami made a strong effort to sign Durant to fill the void.
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs: The Spurs planned to partner Durant with Wembanyama, imagining a mentorship similar to Chris Paul's in 2024–25. Durant's size, scoring prowess, and versatility would have served as an excellent example for Wembanyama's progression.
