Karun Nair Retained, But Kohli Calls Up Prithvi Shaw: India’s Revival Player Assigned No. 4 Spot in England

The legendary return of Karun Nair is one of perseverance and diligence. Following Virender Sehwag, Nair was the sole Indian to ever score a triple century in Test matches, but in 2018 he was benched and never played again for the next eight years. Up until May 24, 2025, when Nair's life came full circle and he was chosen for India's 18-man team for the trip to England. But strangely enough, it was in England itself that something inexplicable occurred with Nair. To do this, we must revisit India's 2018 trip to England, when Virat Kohli served as captain and Ravi Shastri served as their coach.

Nair had some less-than-stellar performances against Australia in the 2017–18 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with scores of 26, 0, 23, and 5, after an undefeated 303 against England in Chennai. The administration, however, supported his inclusion in India's team for the five-Test series. However, that is when Nair's life took a turn for the worst. The BCCI included Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari to the squad even though India had only won the third Test by 203 runs, placing them behind 1-2.

However, after Hardik Pandya was dropped from the fifth Test at The Oval, Kohli, who was the captain at the time, gave Vihari his debut, but Nair remained on the sidelines for the entire match. Furthermore, Nair had hit a triple century in his previous game against England. The former Indian captain was infuriated by the judgement at the time, and even if his rage has subsided since then, the choice continues to perplex the famous Sunil Gavaskar. Nair, who suffered a hard time in 2018 under Kohli's leadership, may be India's best choice to take his place in the batting lineup at number four, according to the Little Master.

What transpired to Karun Nair while India was on tour in England?

"Nair was the second Indian player to hit a triple century in Test cricket. He was a member of the squad that traveled to England in 2018, but he was never given a chance." Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari were sent to England in the middle of that trip due to injury needs. Despite Nair's inclusion in the team, Vihari then made his debut. Gavaskar noted in his Mid-Day piece that there is a high possibility that Nair will bat at No. 4 today.

"The boots are enormous to fill, but as Nair himself once pleaded with cricket to give him another chance, and now that he has it, it will be interesting to see what he does with it. Keep in mind that Rohit Sharma wasn't in that team either, and he went on to lead his nation. Therefore, Nair might write an unforgettable chapter in the annals of Indian cricket if he makes the most of his chance and has good fortune on his side.

Karun Nair's return to India is both encouraging and wonderful.

It's encouraging to see Nair back in the Indian lineup. Indeed, he and Jaydev Unadkat both exemplify grit and an unbreakable spirit. Nair earned his way back through sheer performance – accumulating runs – while Unadkat came within an inch of being chosen. Nair's experience, having previously traveled England as a member of the India team, is something India may rely on now that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have already retired. A tour.
