Kapil Dev Rants: Where Are Sachin, Gavaskar, and Dhoni Amid Kohli-Rohit Mania?
5 months ago | 5 Views
Kapil Dev has had it. The former captain of the India World Cup-winning team has urged the nation to move past this fixation with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, arguing that there is no reason to worry about their absence in England. With their respective retirements from Test cricket, the two mainstays of Indian cricket, Kohli and Rohit, left the Indian team lacking two of its most seasoned players for the five-Test series against England that begins on Friday. Although Kapil reminds us that it's not the end of the world, Kohli announced his retirement only five days after Rohit, on May 7 and May 12, respectively.
There is no doubt that the void left by Kohli and Rohit is enormous, and a group of young players are prepared to step up and take their place. With the exception of KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah, and perhaps Shubman Gill, the majority of the team has not yet competed in Test cricket in England. However, as the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens. The five Test matches represent fantastic chances for these young players to demonstrate their abilities and take over Kohli-Rohit in the upcoming generation of Indian Test cricket.
"Also missing are Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, and Anil Kumble. Therefore, it's pointless to consider who is absent. Though we shall miss them, we must focus on the upcoming generation and take pride in them. Virat has done his job, and Rohit has done his. We were proud of them, but let's see if the next generation of players can be bigger," Kapil told Aaj Tak.
The five Test matches that begin tomorrow at Headingley Cricket Stadium in Leeds became the focus of Kapil's attention. In 2002, India last won here when Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid all hit centuries in the same innings. Twenty-three years have passed, and the only time India has ever triumphed in a Test series in England was in 2007. Kohli and MS Dhoni tried twice, but they were unsuccessful. Shubman Gill, who has only ever participated in three Test matches in England, now takes the baton.

Kapil discusses India's prospects in England.
There have been several reservations about Gill's selection as India's Test captain. People have reminded Gill of the risks involved in his new position, particularly since his performance in SENA countries has been subpar, even though no one has publicly said that he may not be successful. Karthik has told Gill that he is entering a Lion's Den, and Gower has advised him to put more emphasis on his batting than his captaincy, which Karthik also stated. But Kapil is giving the youngster his full support, expressing optimism that this young Indian team will do well in England.
"He's led a lot in the IPL. The differences between Test cricket, T20 cricket, and one-day cricket are huge. You must have nerves in Test matches. He has both the experience and the skills. I don't care about it too much. Kapil stated, "I know this team is good enough to win."
