KL Rahul’s First Advice to Shubman Gill After Being Appointed India’s Test Captain: “Give People Their Space”
5 months ago | 5 Views
Team India commences the new World Test Championship cycle on Friday as they face England in the opening match of the five-Test series at Headingley. This match also marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket, with Shubman Gill taking on the role of captain and Rishabh Pant appointed as his deputy. Following the retirements of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from this format, India has officially entered a transitional phase in Test cricket, and the team aims to make a strong impression right from the start as they confront Ben Stokes' squad.
In anticipation of the match, Gill has received encouragement from his senior teammate KL Rahul, who has been a vital part of India's red-ball team for many years. Rahul has also captained India in select Test matches and is expected to play a significant role in the leadership group to facilitate a smooth transition. He disclosed that he reached out to Gill immediately after the announcement of his appointment as India's next Test captain.
"I contacted Shubman the moment the team was revealed, and when he was named captain. (I told him) You will always find me nearby, for any assistance, any guidance, if you require someone to share thoughts with or converse, I'm always available. However, I believe it is essential to allow individuals their space to truly follow their instincts. If they seek help, I'm always here," Rahul stated to Sony Sports Network. The Indian batsman also emphasized the significance of functioning as a cohesive unit and fostering collective accountability for outcomes.

"We have been together. (If) We do not achieve results in our favor, at some point, everyone makes errors. That will not change. We will strive to support everyone in the team. I'm always here," the batsman remarked.
New era
A crucial theme surrounding India's tour of England revolves around the generational transition within the team, and there are ample reasons for this. In addition to the Test retirements of Rohit and Kohli, India is also anticipated to award debut caps to several players throughout the series. Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh have received their first call-ups for the five-match series.
