KL Rahul Under Fire for Letting Nightwatchman Bat in Crucial Last Over
4 months ago | 5 Views
With six wickets remaining, India needs 135 more runs to win and take a 2-1 series lead after a frustrating last half hour of play on Sunday in the continuing third Test match of the series at the Lord's, where England took three wickets to put India four down in the chase of 193. Nightwatchman Akash Deep was the last wicket to fall on Day 4 in London, leaving India needing 135 more runs to script a victory and take a 2-1 lead in the contest, with six wickets remaining.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for a duck, falling victim to Jofra Archer for the second time in the match, and India's chase got off to a terrible start. Before a lapse in judgement with the latter's departure opened the door for England, the pair established a little alliance as KL Rahul and Karun Nair attempted to stabilize the situation. The mind games worked perfectly when Brydon Carse trapped Shubman Gill right in front of a hostile England camp.
The Indian team management dispatched Akash to hold the fort with 15 minutes remaining, but he gave up in the last over, leaving England in a better position at the conclusion of Day 4. However, the final firing was blamed on Rahul by the internet.
On the first ball of the last over of the day, Rahul hit a single towards mid-wicket with the back of the length delivery from Ben Stokes, placing Akash on strike. Stokes was focused on having a crack at Rahul, while Joe Root right away advised the England captain to deploy an offensive field against the nightwatchman and have a close-in fielder.
Two deliveries later, Root's wish was granted when a short-leg fielder was placed, making the hitter uncomfortable. Akash was bowled by Stokes on the following ball with a fuller delivery.
Following the dismissal, Rahul's supporters were furious because they thought the opening batsman should have remained on strike for the entirety of the last over. But some did come to Rahul's rescue, arguing that it is the nightwatchman's responsibility to shield specialist batters in situations like this, and Akash did his job well by defending his wicket until the very end.
As he shared a brave 67-run partnership with Stokes, Root had previously made a century in the first innings at the Lord's earlier in the day and decided to focus on ones and twos to rescue England on Day 4. At Tea, however, Washington Sundar bowled him out at 40 and also got rid of the in-form Jamie Smith for eight, bringing the home team's score down to 175-6.
After Shoaib Bashir's last wicket, Sundar ended with outstanding stats of 4-22, and India ultimately bundled England for 192 in the last session.
With India at 58/4, Rahul, who is still undefeated at 33, will start the country's events on the last day of the Test match.
