Joe Root Criticizes Shubman Gill for Complaints During Ball Change Controversy: ‘Adapt, Don’t Waste Time’

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England still fascinates fans everywhere. But at the same time, the increasing unpredictability of the Dukes' ball has served as a deterrent. The ball's condition has been a constant source of complaint for both sides during the series, as it has lost its form in 10–12 overs. The Lord's Test is no exception. But on the morning of Day 2, things became a little bit out of hand when Shubman Gill and the on-field officials got into a disagreement.
The replacement ball given out for the second new ball, which arrived after only 10.3 overs of use, was something that he and Mohammed Siraj were unhappy with. Joe Root, who scored a century for England in the first innings, made a drastic recommendation following the conclusion of play on Day 2, suggesting that each side be given three opportunities to exchange the ball over the course of 80 overs.
This will help reduce frustration about the ongoing modifications to the Dukes' ball, he added. Jasprit Bumrah had captured three wickets in fourteen balls as he discussed India's annoyance, but after the ball change, India was unable to gain any support from the surface, and Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith led England past the 350-run threshold.
After 48 deliveries, the ball was switched once more. As a result, the Dukes ball has been subjected to widespread condemnation.
Root told reporters after stumps, "I personally think that if you want to keep getting the ball changed, then each team gets three challenges every 80 overs and that's it, if you want to get it changed."
"However, the rings must be the appropriate size and not too large," he said.
'Can't slow the game down'
Root also made a sly jab at India, stating that one must accept the circumstances as they are and carry on. He claimed that time cannot continue to be wasted and that the pace of the game cannot be slowed down.
"That would be a good way to say that the manufacturer isn't solely responsible for the situation and to come to a compromise. Sometimes these things occur, but you can't keep asking questions, wasting time, and slowing down the game at the same time, Root said.
On the first day, Joe Root remained undefeated at 99. With the first ball of the day, he scored a boundary off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah to get his 37th Test century.
"It's one of those things where you replace the balls if they're losing their form and don't make a big deal out of it." It's not the end of the world, in my opinion. Whether it stops swinging, starts swinging, or does a little bit more, I think it adds a different dynamic to the game, and you have to be skilled enough to adjust to the changes," Root stated.
Regarding the Lord's Test, the game is still up for grabs. India are currently at 145/3, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant still at the crease, while England has 387 runs on the board. There are still 242 runs behind the guests.
