Jasprit Bumrah Reveals Why He Didn’t Become India’s Test Captain: ‘I Spoke to BCCI Before Kohli and Rohit Retired’

Jasprit Bumrah eventually spoke out about India's Test captaincy, disclosing that he was the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee's first pick but had declined it due to workload concerns. After Rohit Sharma retired from red-ball cricket and Virat Kohli followed suit, Shubman Gill was chosen as India's Test captain for the trip to England. Ideally, Bumrah would have succeeded Rohit as vice-captain of the Test squad, having even led the team in three Tests—one in England and two in Australia—during Rohit's absence. However, everything was thrown off by the back injury he sustained during the Sydney Test in Australia.

Bumrah revealed in a SKY Sports interview with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik that he had discussed his workload with BCCI officials and selectors prior to Rohit and Kohli's announcement of their Test retirement last month. The doctors and physios advised him to be sensible with his body in order to extend his career, so he had to make the difficult choice of relinquishing the captaincy.

"I had discussed my workloads for a five-test match series with the BCCI prior to Rohit and Virat retiring during the IPL. I've talked to the folks who have taken care of my back. I've also chatted with the surgeon, who has consistently told me that you need to be very intelligent about the workloads. After talking to him, we agreed that I need to be a bit more intelligent. Bumrah stated, "So then I called the BCCI and said I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role because I won't be able to give all the Test matches in a five-test match series."

India's fast bowling leader further stated that he did not want the Indian team to have two captains in a single Test series.

"Yes, the BCCI was seeking me out as a leader." However, I had to disagree and explain that it's not fair for the team either to have someone else in charge of three matches in a five-test match series and someone else in charge of two matches. That isn't fair to the squad. And, he continued, I had always made it a priority to put the team first.

Bumrah was unable to participate in the Champions Trophy and the initial weeks of the IPL due to the back injury he sustained during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Remarkably, he experienced a stress-related injury to his back for the second time. He was compelled to take more than a year off the first time it happened.

The reasons for Jasprit Bumrah's resignation as India Test captain and Shubman Gill's appointment are as follows

Bumrah stated that, as a player, he can contribute more to the team's success than just serving as captain.

"Even if my presence as a player provides significantly more, just not as a captain. Although the captaincy is a position, you alway have team leaders. And I also wanted to accomplish that.

Bumrah, who is often regarded as the top fast bowler in world cricket, stated that he does not want to expose his body to the risk of not being able to play three formats on a regular basis.

"I don't want to find myself in a situation where I have to leave this format suddenly, and I'm not sure about the future if I'm not cautious." I believed it would be best for the squad to focus on the long term and for continuity's sake, and I could assist in whatever way possible. But yeah, being a captain was really important. I had put in a lot of effort for it. But regrettably, you occasionally need to consider the big picture. I like cricket better than captaincy. As a player, I want to give more to the Indian squad and as a cricketer. Then, you know, that's how it is, even if there are ambitions. I also told the BCCI over the phone that I didn't want to be seen in a leadership capacity.
