Only on Day 5 of the first Test did the umpires ultimately replace the ball after almost 25 overs of persuasion, a player receiving a warning, and up to five Indian players expressing complaints, inquiries, and mild discontent. In the second innings, India was dissatisfied with the state of the ball. Even at the conclusion of Day 4, when Rishabh Pant vented his annoyance by throwing the ball away when umpire Paul Reiffel refused to comply with his request for a ball change, it was still very evident. The game's referee scolded the Indian vice-captain for his conduct.

However, this did not alter how Indian fielders perceived the ball. Early on Day 5, Captain Shubman Gill was the first player to voice his worries about it. He was accompanied by seasoned batter KL Rahul, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur. The gauge test was passed by the ball a few times.

India persisted with the ball despite the lack of cause for umpires Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney to initiate a change. The fact that the surface provided nothing would undoubtedly have played a significant role in India's decision to change the ball, with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley performing well.

Jadeja chose to play a little prank on the umpires as he prepared to deliver the 28th over. In front of umpire Gaffaney, who smiled back at him, he celebrated by clutching his fists. He even wrapped his arm around Jadeja and politely requested that he begin bowling.

In response to Jadeja's conduct, Stuart Broad remarked during commentary, "Never seen a player celebrating for the umpire."

At the very moment of lunch, the incident took place. With the altered ball, Siraj bowled one over and Bumrah only bowled one. India would be hoping for more movement than there was in the previous one, even if there wasn't a major shift. If not, then Crawley and Dukett, who led England to 117/0, could easily seize the match from India's grip.
