Injuries Sideline Sinner and Djokovic from Canadian Masters, Alcaraz Now in the Spotlight

Due to injuries he sustained during Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, and Jannik Sinner, the Wimbledon 2025 champion, have both withdrawn from the Canadian Open, which is scheduled to begin on July 26. In addition to them, British No. 1 Jack Draper has pulled out of the competition due to an arm issue. Draper is still optimistic that he will be able to make it back in time for the US Open.

"I'm really sorry to be missing the National Bank Open in Toronto, especially because I have such great memories of playing in Canada," said Sinner, who suffered an elbow injury at SW19.

"Although winning that championship in Toronto two years ago marked the beginning of a very special time for me, I must prioritize my health after speaking with my team. "I would like to express my gratitude to tournament director Karl Hale for all of his hard work, and I hope to play in front of the amazing crowd in Toronto, Canada, in the future."

Due to this year's busy schedule, which includes the conclusion of Wimbledon just two weeks before, the Toronto Masters 1000, which runs from July 27 to August 7, is set to miss a number of tennis legends. Due to injuries, Djokovic, Draper, and Sinner have all verified that they will not be present. Alcaraz may also miss the Canadian event, according to the Spanish media source MARCA. Alcaraz has stated that he will listen to his body and get enough sleep in order to be in top shape for the US Open, the season's last Grand Slam, which takes place from August 24 to September 7, even if his involvement is not formally ruled out.

Prior to the New York Grand Slam, he will compete in Cincinnati from August 7–18 in the Masters 1000 tournament.

Samuel López will train Alcaraz in Ohio, while Juan Carlos Ferrero will do so in New York. He had both of them with him during his campaigns in France and England. For the first time in his career, Alcaraz will have a chance to catch up to Sinner for the top spot in the world at the US Open. In contrast to Sinner's 2,000 points, he is only protecting 50. Alcaraz has only 60 points to defend during the whole American hard-court swing, including just 10 from Cincinnati, while Sinner stands to lose 200 points from skipping Canada and 3,000 points overall from his championships in Cincinnati and the US Open.

Following his withdrawal from the Mutua Madrid Open due to a muscular issue, the Spaniard will now miss his second Masters 1000 tournament of the year in Toronto. Due to its proximity to the Paris Olympic Games, he also missed Montreal last year. In 2023, he last played in Canada, where he made it to the quarterfinals before being defeated by Tommy Paul.

Alcaraz also misses the chance to narrow a 1,180-point deficit with Sinner by skipping Toronto. In the battle for the top spot, Alcaraz might have earned 1,000 points by taking home the championship, making this a huge missed opportunity, while Sinner loses 180 points from his quarterfinal defeat to Rublev the previous year.

Due to fitness concerns after an accident during his Wimbledon quarterfinal match earlier this month against Flavio Cobolli, the world's 18th-ranked player, Novak Djokovic will also be absent from the Canadian Open. His last participation in the tournament was in 2022, making this the seventh time he has missed it.

The Serb said, "I sustained an injury to my left arm following Wimbledon, nothing major, but I need to make sure it heals completely for the remainder of the season."

"Sadly, I won't be able to participate in Cincinnati and Toronto. I'll see you in New York City.
