India’s Poor Fielding Cost Leeds Test, Says Gavaskar; Advises Players to Scrap Optional Training
5 months ago | 5 Views
In his first game as Test captain, Shubman Gill's tenure began inauspiciously. Even though India saw five centuries in the first game against England in Leeds, they were defeated by five wickets. India lost its third consecutive Test match and seventh overall in the previous twelve as the Ben Stokes-led team defeated them in the five-game series, 0-1.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar attributed India's defeat solely to poor fielding, despite the majority of the criticism centered on the batting collapse during both innings and Jasprit Bumrah's lack of support from his fellow pacers.
The missed opportunities were noted throughout the five days of play, but Gavaskar also expressed his displeasure with the fielding mistakes in his interview with Sony Sports. He blamed the terrible bowling on the fact that Headingley's pitch was conducive to batting.
"Full credit to England." Even though India only had five centurions, they seemed to have that assurance. They were able to win the last wickets because of it. Because those additional runs might have made the difference, India also missed out on that opportunity. The out-fielding was rather average, but the fielding itself was just not up to par. He stated, "Not Test class."
"The pitch is excellent for batting, making it difficult to critique the bowlers." Bumrah's bowling was fantastic. Having someone to keep things under control would have been really beneficial. However, this is the first Test. Let's hope lessons have been learned. The upcoming match is in eight days.

Gavaskar wants there to be no choice in practice.
Additionally, the renowned Indian batsman stated that Indian players should take a day or two off after the defeat in Leeds and skip any unnecessary practice sessions.
"You can take the next few days off, but now get into practice seriously. Don't consider this optional practice. You are here to represent India in the game. Therefore, you should practice in a manner that gives you the best results, he advised.
"I mean, Cheteshwar Pujara has been on the optional team. When he has chosen to bat there, I have seen individuals, even the coaching staff, ask, "What are you doing?" "Can't you take a break or something?" the coaching staff said, even though I've been on some of them and Cheteshwar wasn't on this one.
Edgbaston will host the start of the second Test match the following week, on July 2.
