Cricket will temporarily take a backseat on Friday as India and England prepare to honor the victims of the tragic Ahmedabad air disaster prior to the opening Test at Headingley. Both teams will observe a minute of silence and don black armbands to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
The disaster, which took place on June 12, resulted in the deaths of 274 individuals after a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, destined for London, crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad. Among the victims were 181 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens, making the forthcoming tribute in Leeds particularly meaningful for both teams.
Before the commencement of the five-Test series, India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant conveyed the profound sorrow felt by the team and pledged to restore some joy to the nation through their on-field performance. "The entire nation was saddened by the aircraft incident," Pant remarked.

"Our focus will be on how we can bring happiness back to India," he continued.
"The emotions will always be heightened due to the crash, but simultaneously, we are committed to putting forth our best efforts for the country. Making them happy is an additional responsibility we carry."
The tragedy reverberated throughout both nations, and the global cricket community also extended its condolences. Moments after takeoff, the aircraft lost control and crashed into a hostel block of the B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area. It is believed that only one individual survived the crash.
Both teams commence their World Test Championship cycles
The Test series holds great significance for both teams, as it marks the beginning of their respective World Test Championship cycles. For Team India, this series is especially important as the team enters a transitional phase in Test cricket, with the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin from the format.
Shubman Gill will captain the Indian team for the first time in the red-ball format, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant appointed as his deputy.
