India Sink to Historic Test Cricket Low — A First in Nearly 150 Years
5 months ago | 5 Views
Tuesday marked one of England's finest victories of the Bazball era, as they took a 1-0 lead in the five-game series. India suffered an embarrassing all-time low with the five-wicket defeat, even though the Ben Stokes-led squad achieved a resounding triumph, with the home team executing their second-highest successful chase.
India's total score of 835 in the Leeds Test match was the highest in 11 years and the third-highest in a single game in England. The total included five centuries in the two innings, two of which were scored by vice-captain Rishabh Pant. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were the other centurions in the first innings, while KL Rahul reached his triple-figure score in the second. If anything, the knocks alleviated all fears regarding the Indian batting lineup going into the series opener following the departures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Their attempts, however, were in vain as England easily pursued it. England completed their second-highest chase in history, scoring 371 runs with five wickets remaining after nearly wiping out the first innings in Leeds, falling just six runs short of the mark, and after Zak Crawley's century and Harry Brook's 99. Their best-ever chase, of 378, incidentally occurred in Birmingham in 2021 against India.
Consequently, India was the first team in test history to lose after five centuries of play, which occurred 148 years ago. In 1928/29, Australia defeated England four times, which was the previous low. Additionally, 835 was the highest total for India, the second-highest against England behind Pakistan's 847 in 2022, and the fourth-highest overall in a losing effort.
Beginning on July 2 at Edgbaston, India will attempt to make a comeback in the second Test match.
