New captain Shubman Gill has been subject to criticism from various groups of supporters and professionals since India's loss in the first Test match against England in Leeds. India's batting was outstanding, with centuries from Gill, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, as well as two centuries from vice-captain Rishabh Pant. Even though it had been centuries, England won the Test by five wickets because of fielding mistakes and a subpar bowling attack.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin came to Gill's defense, saying that it was too soon to discuss his leadership and that he still needs some time.

"This is only his first game as a captain; you cannot discuss captaincy right now. Regarding the captaincy, he said that it was too soon to discuss it.

"He has only just taken over, and we ought to give him a fair chance. Therefore, you should provide him with a great deal of time and encouragement. We cannot simply criticize and complain about players in such a manner.

Fear of Jasprit Bumrah led to England chasing down target in hurry in opening Test: 'I wasn't expecting him to bowl'

‘Too reliant on Jasprit Bumrah’

Additionally, he emphasized India's excessive reliance on Jasprit Bumrah and advised Gill to include Kuldeep Yadav in the starting XI for the second Test.

"They rely too heavily on Bumrah. It's difficult since you need better bowlers and they should compete against Kuldeep Yadav," he stated.

In Birmingham, the second test is set to start on July 2. Gill became the sixth Indian Test captain to start his leadership with a defeat when India lost the opening Test.

Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar also recently blasted Gill's leadership style and highlighted his defensive field placement. He also criticized Gill's leadership style and character.

“Regardless of whether they would have taken wickets, Kohli would have made it clear to the opposition that he’s actively trying to get them out. Gill's personality and leadership style are not like that. But he said that maybe it would have been preferable to be a bit less protective and not to try to get ahead of events.
