Imane Khelif’s Controversial Medical Report: Does It Suggest Male Identity?
6 months ago | 5 Views
Imane Khelif, an Olympic rower competing for Algeria, has been accused once again of being biologically male. Khelif won gold in Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics, just a year after being barred from International Boxing Association (IBA) competitions.
The IBA banned Khelif in 2023 after tests in New Delhi reportedly showed DNA indicating he was male. These results were shared with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which took over boxing regulation from the IBA. The IOC recommended that Khelif be removed from the competition. However, his female passport status allowed her to participate in Paris.
This is the first time official sex-test results from the 2023 World Championships have been made public. According to the medical report, Khelif is biologically male. American journalist Alan Abrahamson said she was disqualified in March 2023 after a test in New Delhi supposedly flagged her as male.
The report describes Khelif’s results as "abnormal" and states that "Chromosome analysis reveals male karyotype." A karyotype shows all the chromosomes in a person’s body. The IBA indicated that Khelif’s chromosomes are XY, which is typical for males.
The test results are printed on the letterhead of Dr. Lal PathLabs in New Delhi, which is certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and accredited by the American College of Pathologists.
This contradicts comments from IOC spokesman Mark Adams during the Paris Olympics. He called the test that disqualified Khelif “ad hoc” and said it was "not legitimate".
After the leaked report, one person on X (formerly Twitter) commented, "We all knew that." Another said, “This is shocking.” A third person replied, "Never believe anything ‘leaked’."
Khelif denies being a man and has even sued Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling for cyberbullying. She is 26 and plans to keep competing. Her goal is to win another gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
But the World Boxing Organization announced she can’t compete as a woman in the future unless she submits to the same chromosome test that already led to her disqualification worldwide.
