Magnus Carlsen appeared to be extending his advantage in Norway. Another three points for chess 2025, including a second victory over current World Champion D. Gukesh. However, the 18-year-old staged a remarkable comeback, capitalizing on a mistake made by the World in the latter stages of the game, when he was behind. No. 1, and defeating Carlsen for his first classical victory.

The manner of Gukesh's victory was so remarkable that it is being dubbed the 'turnaround of the year' by both experts and supporters. The victory stunned Carlsen as much, and he slammed the table in rage as the pieces also tumbled off. With the video becoming viral online, it also stunned the audience and reviewers. The Indian GM stood up, appearing stunned and bewildered, and shook hands with Carlsen, who had just pounded the table and was equally surprised to have won his first classical victory against the Norwegian. After that, as Carlsen went back, he patted Gukesh on the back and left.

Gukesh's victory was the ideal retaliation since he had lost to Carlsen in the first round. With 8.5 points, Gukesh is now in third position, only one point behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Gukesh also made a remarkable recovery, as he didn't seem to be in top condition after his defeat in the first round by Carlsen. However, he managed to turn things around on Sunday and win against Carlsen in 62 moves over the course of four hours.

Magnus Carlsen's entire reaction to D Gukesh's amazing vengeance, as seen in this video:

In a statement following Gukesh's victory, his coach Grzegorz Gajewski lauded the teen prodigy for pushing his battle against Carlsen to its limits and ultimately prevailing.

"Because you know you can do it again once you've done it, it (win) simply gives D Gukesh a huge boost of confidence. "And that's the plan," he declared.

"And it gives him (Gukesh) a boost for the upcoming competition (Norway Chess)." We hope to overcome yet another insurmountable barrier. "Ideal," he said.

In the meanwhile, on Sunday, Caruana defeated fellow American GM Hikaru Nakamura in armageddon with a black draw. In the meantime, Arjun erigaisi capitalized on a mistake made by Wei Yi to win their armageddon game with White.

In the women's division, Koneru Humpy blundered her rook against Vaishali Rameshbabu, giving Anna Muzychuk the advantage after her armageddon victory over IM Sara Khadem. In a thrilling time scramble against Lei Tingjie, GM Ju Wenjun also secured her fifth Armageddon victory in a row.
