Glenn Maxwell, an Australian all-rounder, declared his retirement from One-Day Internationals on Monday in order to concentrate on the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka the following year. In order to focus on his preparations for the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the Big Bash League, and his other international commitments, the right-handed batsman, who last played for the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, decided to end his ODI career.

The 36-year-old played for Australia in 149 ODIs. During the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, he may have produced one of the best ODI innings. Australia was reeling at 91/7 against Afghanistan, but Maxwell managed to steal the game away from Afghanistan's grip despite suffering from excruciating cramps in the sweltering heat.

With captain Pat Cummins, he formed a 202-run partnership that helped Australia pursue 293. Maxwell scored 201 runs off 128 balls and was not out. In the end, Australia defeated India at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium to win the World Cup.

Throughout his ODI career, Maxwell had a strike rate of 126, which is second only to Andre Russell of the West Indies in the 50-over format.

The right-handed hitter blasted 23 fifties and four hundreds. In his ODI career, he also captured 77 wickets, with his best stats being 4/40 against India in Rajkot. In terms of batting, he concludes his ODI career with 3990 runs at a 33.81 average.

felt like I was letting the team down

Maxwell said that the physical toll of the 50-over format, combined with a possible leg injury that might end his career, was starting to impact his fielding skills as he explained why he chose to retire from ODIs.

He said that he felt this way at the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, where India defeated Australia in the semifinal.

"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting to the conditions. According to an official release from Cricket Australia, I spoke with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and asked him about his future plans.

"We discussed the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, 'I don't think I'm going to make that; it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own.'" He went on to say that he hoped they would have enough of a head start to hold onto that position.

Additionally, Maxwell said that his desire to keep playing for Australia was motivated by selfish considerations.

"I always stated that I wouldn't give up my place if I thought I was still competent to play." I didn't want to simply hang on for a few series and nearly play for selfish motives," Maxwell stated.

"This gives them the best perspective on the line-up heading into the next World Cup because they are moving in such a clear direction. I know how crucial that preparation is," he said.

Due to a finger injury, Maxwell was recently excluded from the IPL 2025 season. The all-rounder represented the Punjab Kings in seven games, recording four wickets and 48 runs.

At the age of 36, the man said that he was chosen out of nowhere and ahead of his time when reflecting on his professional path. But in the 50-over format, he is thankful to have such a lengthy and successful career representing Australia.

Australia's World Cup-winning squads in 2015 and 2023 included Maxwell.

"I think back to when I was chosen out of the blue and before my time." I was happy to represent Australia in a few games. I was under the impression that I was just going to have that, Maxwell stated.

"Since then, I have been able to experience the highs and lows of being released, being brought back, competing in several World Cups, and being a member of some amazing teams," he said.
