Earlier this month in Birmingham, Shubman Gill had a record-breaking performance, scoring 430 runs in the second Test against England. In the third Test at Lord's, however, he ran into his first obstacle of the series, managing only 16 and 6. The setback caused the India captain to lose ground in the ICC rankings, and he paid the price for it. As the ICC crowned a new No. 1 Test batter on Wednesday, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal were also not spared.

Gill had moved up to his highest position in the ICC Test standings—sixth place—as a result of his knocks of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, where India had won a record 336 runs. But he fell three spots to ninth with a score of 765 after scoring only 22 runs in the third Test, which India lost by 22 runs, putting them behind 1-2 in the series.

The most recent ICC rankings, which were published on Wednesday, also saw Jaiswal and Pant fall. Jaiswal, who was ousted by Jofra Archer in both innings at Lord's, where he scored 13 and 0, fell one spot to fifth. Despite scoring a courageous 74 in the first innings while overcoming a finger ailment, Pant fell from seventh to eighth.

The new No. 1 Test hitter is chosen

Harry Brook (862), who has fallen behind Kane Williamson to third place, has been overtaken by Joe Root (888 rating points) for the top spot in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings. In the first innings at Lord's, Root scored a match-winning century. Since Kumar Sangakkara, who held the top spot at age 37 when he was crowned No. 1 in December 2014, Root, now 34, is the oldest cricketer to have held the position. This is Root's eighth time holding the top spot.

In the interim, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah maintained his position at the top of the Test bowling rankings, holding a commanding 50-point advantage over Kagiso Rabada of South Africa.
