Gavaskar Criticizes Officials for Ignoring Virat Kohli’s Dangerous Play: ‘He’s Untouchable’

At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar wasted no time in condemning Virat Kohli's reckless and intolerable behavior during the IPL 2025 final between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS). RCB were put in to bat first, but Kohli started to seek for quick twos and threes since boundaries were difficult to come by and they were losing the game.

On the fifth delivery of the 12th over of the RCB innings, bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal, Kohli sprinted for a quick double. The right-handed batter sent the ball wide of the long-on fielder and quickly asked for two. Liam Livingstone was able to establish his position comfortably at the non-striker's end after diving.

But Gavaskar, who was on the air at the moment, immediately saw Kohli sprinting directly down the field. At that point, he criticized the umpires for failing to hold the previous RCB captain accountable for a hazardous action that might have changed the pitch's condition and caused the 22-yards to become more worn out when the Punjab Kings came out on top.

"Kohli is quick at running between the wickets. Gavaskar stated on the broadcast, "He knew it was two as soon as he struck the ball."

"He said two right away, running straight down the pitch. He will never be informed by an umpire. He's back there, sprinting up the field. The Punjab Kings are batting second, he said.

The debate over Kohli's strike rate has begun.

The strategies used by Virat Kohli in the IPL 2025 championship game against the Punjab Kings caused a lot of discussion. Rather than aiming for huge hits, the batter seemed to be trying to turn the strike.

Matthew Hayden, a former Australian opening batsman, seemed to criticize the strategy during his time on the English broadcast, suggesting that Kohli should aim for a high score because 200 is only a par total on the Ahmedabad surface.

In the full IPL 2025 season, Kohli has been hitting at a strike rate of about 150. In the championship match, however, the batter adopted a different strategy, attempting to pass the strike to hard hitters like Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar.

Kohli appeared to be instructed by RCB head coach Andy Flower and batting coach Dinesh Karthik to increase the run rate during the first strategic time-out, which occurred at the conclusion of the ninth over.

Finally, in the 15th over, Afghan pacer Azmatullah Omarzai caught Kohli. After hitting 43 runs off 35 pitches, the right-handed hitter walked back to the dugout. The allotted 20 overs saw RCB finish with 190/9.

Previously, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. For the crucial summit match, RCB and PBKS both kept their lineups the same.
