Gautam Gambhir Approaches Umpire Over Covers Call as Dressing Room Watches on Day 5

The last day of the second Test match at Edgbaston saw India's march toward a series-leveling victory against England interrupted by rain that postponed the start of play. While the wait was annoying, what stood out was a view from the ground as the ground crew was getting ready to replace the covers, as Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir had a quick but forceful chat with on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney.

There was a slight feeling of optimism surrounding the possibility that play might resume after the rain had momentarily stopped. However, the ground crew immediately began covering the pitch as Gaffaney was spotted conversing with Gambhir. The choice was further supported by the return of the drizzle minutes later, which disrupted India's momentum once more.

The timing of the exchange between Gambhir and the umpires indicated it may have had something to do with the restart plans and the chance that the covers may be redeployed, even if there was no formal statement on the exchange. In the meantime, from the balcony, the dressing room kept a careful eye on the scenario, recognizing that every minute lost could be crucial.

7 wickets between India and victory

India will be hoping that the weather improves because the team still needs seven wickets to win the game, which would tie the series at 1-1. Day 4 saw the visitors take control, leaving England at 72/3 after only 16 overs, with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj wreaking havoc with the new ball.

With a sharp ball that found the edge and was expertly caught by substitute Sai Sudharsan, Siraj established the tone by dismissing Zak Crawley for a duck. Akash Deep kept up his strong performance, first castling Ben Duckett with a late inswinger before hitting Joe Root's stumps with a dream ball.

India are still in command, barring weather conditions, with just seven wickets remaining and England still 556 runs behind. Before stumps on Day 4, Harry Brook and Ollie Pope stood firm, but if play resumes, the hosts will have a difficult challenge.

At the moment, all eyes are still on the skies over Birmingham and on whether India's patience in finishing the game will be rewarded with enough time on the last day.
