Gambhir Receives ‘Brutally Honest’ Critique Over Shreyas Iyer Omission Amid India’s Post-Kohli, Rohit Transition

According to Nick Knight, Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in the Test team for the England tour would have made India's transition in the post-Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma era much easier. The former England opener believes Iyer is an important player India might have relied on during this transitional period. Although Iyer has been in excellent form in all formats during the past season, he hasn't played in the Test squad since the beginning of last year.
India's top order is now defined more by promise than pedigree, as two generational hitters, Kohli and Rohit, left the red-ball game last month. Knight, a well-known commentator, emphasized the importance of this juncture for the revamped Indian batting lineup. Knight stated that the time is right for the youngsters to step up, even if he admitted the pair was missing.
"Now is the time for Indian cricket to learn to live without Rohit and Virat." I'm going to be really truthful here. Shreyas Iyer ought to be present. That would have made this transition somewhat easier. "But there’s still plenty of ability there," Knight told PTI.
With experienced anchors missing, the responsibility falls largely on KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, the newly appointed captain, who are among the team's seasoned batsmen. Sai Sudharsan is generally anticipated to assume the No. 3 position, while the reinstatement of Karun Nair, who has been excelling in the red-ball format, adds stability to the middle order.
"Shubhman Gill is fourth, Sai Sudarshan is third for me, and then you go from there," Knight stated.
"Sai is an excellent player. He plays at a late hour. You'll hear that frequently throughout this series. Players who strike the ball under their eyeline, by the front pad, don't get out in front of you, follow the ball a little bit, play the early line, and don't follow the line as it moves laterally... all of these things are essential for success in English conditions.
The first test will begin on June 20
The five-test series will begin on June 20 in Leeds, marking the start of the World Test Championship for both teams. England had previously revealed their 14-man roster for the first Test, which included Jamie Overton's return to the Test squad after more than three years.
