Gambhir & Gill’s Jasprit Bumrah Scoop Bamboozles Vaughan; India’s Playing XI Raises Eyebrows

Despite being down 0-1 in the five-match series, Michael Vaughan is the most recent voice in a chorus of astonishment at India's decision to give Jasprit Bumrah a break for the second test at Edgbaston. Given India's desperate need to recover from the Headingley debacle, Bumrah's absence prompted many former players and coaches, like Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Tom Moody, and Nasser Hussain, to publicly wonder why the world's top Test bowler was being rested.

Vaughan didn't try to conceal his shock when he spoke with Cricbuzz. "I've been taken aback by the fact that India has said Jasprit Bumrah will only be playing in three Tests. What reason would you have for informing them of that? Simply play three. Fine, if you don't choose him. However, after seven days and India losing the series, I expected him to play here, he said.

The former captain of England emphasized the game's importance, slamming India's timing and strategy: "India has to win this game. They will be 2-0 down if they lose here, and you will bring Jasprit back to Lord's... I know the players want to play at Lord's. However, I'm just thinking about India; they must win this week.

Vaughan went on to ask about the general makeup of the Indian team, which had a plethora of all-rounders but only five professional batsmen. "I would have wanted two more bowlers." Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Bumrah are the players I would like to see. On this sort of surface at Edgbaston, you might argue that three spinners would have worked. He also described it as "dry and slow."

Following Day 1, India is at 310/5

India, who was invited by England to bat first on Day 1, scored 310/5 at Stumps thanks to a tough undefeated 114 from captain Shubman Gill, who scored his second century in as many Tests as an Indian captain.

During a 99-run partnership with Gill, Ravindra Jadeja held things steady with an undefeated 41, while Yashasvi Jaiswal wowed with 87 but ultimately fell short of a century. In a brief 42-ball stint at the crease, during which he scored 25, Rishabh Pant, who had centuries in both innings in Headingley, was unable to replicate his heroics but did display his characteristic aggression and flair.

The lack of Bumrah, though, has remained the main topic of conversation, even after the strong conclusion.
