Gambhir Faces Backlash for Telling Rishabh to ‘Keep Scoring or Get Dropped’ in Press Conference

Following Shubman Gill and company's five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test of the five-match series at Headingley, Leeds on Tuesday, India head coach Gautam Gambhir is receiving criticism for his remarks about Rishabh Pant on social media. As only the second wicketkeeper-batter in the history of the sport, after Andy Flower, to accomplish the feat, the left-handed batsman had a memorable match, scoring centuries in both innings.
The southpaw amassed a total of 252 runs in the Headingley Test, scoring 134 and 118. He is currently the seventh Indian batsman to hit a century in each innings of a Test match. In England, he is the first Indian batter to accomplish this.
Following England's 371 run chase in Headingley, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, Gautam Gambhir spoke to reporters. At that point, one reporter chose to inquire about Pant.
After scoring two centuries, the previous Indian opener was questioned about his opinion on Pant's heroic performances. But the journalist should have included the other three centurions—KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal—in the query, Gambhir retorted, becoming irritated by it.
“The additional three centuries are also significant advantages. Gambhir said, "I would have preferred if you had stated 100 from Yashasvi, 100 from Shubman on his debut as captain, 100 from KL, and 2 centuries from Rishabh."
"Hence, 5 centuries in a Test match." To be honest, it's a great beginning, and maybe the question could have been phrased better," he said.
Social media users criticize Gautam Gambhir
Now, many fans on social media are voicing their disapproval of Gambhir's handling of Rishabh Pant and his failure to acknowledge his talents during the press conference. Additionally, supporters encouraged Rishabh Pant to maintain his performance.
These are a few of the tweets from fans:
Rishabh Pant also missed a catch off Ravindra Jadeja's bowling, according to India captain Shubman Gill, who spoke at the post-match presentation. Gill's statement has also drawn the ire of fans.
"In my opinion, he (Jadeja) bowled really well, and he did create a couple of opportunities for us, a few pop-ups that Rishabh didn't notice, but that happens in a cricket match," Gill stated.
After scoring two centuries, the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant reached his highest Test ranking of seven.
India would now go to Edgbaston for the second Test after the defeat in Headingley. The second game will start on July 2.
