The official lineup was announced last Tuesday, and D Gukesh will be missing the upcoming Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam. The current world champion had subpar performances at the Paris and Weissenhaus Grand Slams.

He was recently competing at Norway Chess 2025, where he came in third place, behind Magnus Carlsen, the champion, and Fabiano Caruana, who came in second.

In an interview with TimesofIndia.com, Freestyle Chess CEO and co-founder Jan Henric Buettner discussed Gukesh's absence from the Las Vegas squad. "He told me he's worn out and needs some rest," he said.

"His performances have not been that good at any Grand Slam. We always assumed he would refuse to take part in the following occasion.

"Regardless, he received an invitation (for the Las Vegas portion). Therefore, despite his subpar showing in Paris, he was still prepared for the challenge. "We're gonna come," he stated. I'm going to Las Vegas.

Vidit Gujrathi has taken Gukesh's place in the Las Vegas roster, according to Buettner as well.
