The verbal dispute between Biles and Gaines began, according to People, with a Minnesota State High School League social media message congratulating a transgender athlete on winning a softball championship. Referring to pitcher Marissa Rothenberger, Gaines said, "To be expected when your star player is a boy."

Biles criticized the article in public and condemned Gaines for her comments. What started as an ideological dispute has evolved into a public quarrel characterized by sarcasm, covert insults, and, in now, pregnancy disclosures.
