England’s Rush to Finish: Dodging Bumrah’s Bowling in Test Match
5 months ago | 5 Views
As the hosts ultimately triumphed by five wickets, the opening Test between India and England was a tight contest. India took the second new ball as Ben Stokes and his teammates were approaching 371 runs at Headingley, requiring only 22 runs with five wickets remaining.
The hosts brought things to a conclusion quickly. After the new ball was taken, Jamie Smith struck Ravindra Jadeja for two sixes and a four, ending the game in just two overs.
"The runs at that point (when Smith decided to go after Jadeja) were not too many, so I wasn't expecting him (Bumrah) to come on and bowl (with the new ball), but you're just never quite sure, especially in cricket," Smith said on ESPNcricinfo.
“You never know what will happen. Even though I always support our tail, there might be a few good balls, and all of a sudden, the pressure is back on you because you're eight points behind. It was great to simply finish it and move on.

"I knew there was a new ball coming, and it looks as though I'd exposed Chris Woakes (at No. 8)," he said, "but at that point, if I'd hit another couple of sixes in that over, you're taking all the momentum into the new ball," he said, revealing it was a calculated risk.
"Although the second new ball has the potential to take wickets, it also has the potential to raise the scoring rate. It's never without some level of deliberate planning.
With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently announcing their Test retirements, the continuing series sees a new generation of cricketers assume the leadership role. Although Shubman Gill has taken over as the new Test captain, his first match was a loss. In the meantime, Jadeja, Bumrah, and KL Rahul are the only remaining members of the former leadership structure.
