England Tour Opener: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Sublime Century Earns High Praise from Team
5 months ago | 5 Views
Playing against England is something Yashasvi Jaiswal enjoys. As he hit a century on day one of the first Test of the five-game series in Leeds, the left-handed opening batsman from India persisted in his infatuation with Ben Stokes and company. During the second session of the first day of the five-game series, the 23-year-old finished his century off 144 balls. To the delight of the whole Indian dressing room, Jaiswal reached the milestone off Brydon Carse's bowling.
Jaiswal leapt for joy as soon as he hit a single to cap off the historic moment. While the likes of KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna, and Gautam Gambhir in the changing room took note of the young man's accomplishment, Shubman Gill, who was at the opposite end, was also unable to hold back his applause.
This marks his third century against the Three Lions as a result of this century's war against England. Jaiswal had previously scored over 700 runs in the five-match series against England in January and February of 2024. Jaiswal is now a Test hundred scorer with five centuries to his credit as he gets better and better at the longest format.

In addition to battling cramps in his hands, Jaiswal also fought hard to overcome them. He requested the physios twice. But he persisted in fighting, and his dedication and perseverance paid off.
Jaiswal is making his debut visit to the UK, and he has gotten off to a great start in the prestigious series. It should be noted that Jaiswal had also scored a century in the inaugural Test Down Under.
Jaiswal helped calm all of India's nerves before the game against England, which would be played without the help of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, by forming a 91-run partnership for the first wicket with KL Rahul.
Between the two, Jaiswal was the more offensive batsman since he continued to hit the loose balls for boundaries. The left-handed hitter had no qualms about hitting the big, booming cut shots. Before pulling out the drive right down the ground, he didn't even pause.
India lost the wickets of Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul in a flash during the opening session. Nonetheless, along with captain Shubman Gill, Jaiswal maintained the course of the Indian innings. The pair showed their own brand of offensive hitting since they didn't allow any pitcher to find a rhythm at the crease.
Jaiswal unleashed his attack against the spinner right away and didn't hesitate to take to the skies when Ben Stokes brought Shoaib Bashir into the attack.
"He is an amazing player of spin," said Michael Atherton, who was providing commentary at the time. "He is an amazing player of spin." He doesn't hold back.
"He is one of the most thrilling young players in the world right now. With a fantastic 100, Yashasvi Jaiswal introduces himself in England," he continued.
Rahul and Jaiswal establish a new record.
KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored India's best opening stand at Headingley with 91 runs. The pair surpassed Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikkanth's 64-run opening wicket partnership from 1986.
After their 201-run opening partnership against Australia in Perth in November 2024, this was Rahul and Jaiswal's second 50+ opening partnership.
Ben Stokes, the captain of England, had previously won the toss and invited India to bat first. Sai Sudharsan was introduced by the visitors. But because he was bowled for a duck in the first innings, the left-hander didn't make an impression.
Additionally, after an eight-year absence, Karun Nair rejoined the Test playing XI. In 2017, in Bengaluru, he last faced Australia.
