England Test Preview: Gill’s Confidence Issues Expose His Weak Spot
5 months ago | 5 Views
Prior to the first Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, team India captain Shubman Gill is being examined. The 25-year-old, who recently assumed the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, will face his first significant test in difficult foreign conditions, where he must demonstrate his batting ability. He has only scored 559 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 25.40 in his batting performances outside of Asia, and he has not yet achieved a century in red-ball cricket played outside of Asia. His performance in England is especially alarming; he has only scored 88 runs in three Test matches, with an average of just 14.66.
Former England cricketer Nick Knight, who saw Shubman's batting firsthand during his commentary work in the IPL, revealed a weakness in his defense prior to the Test series.
"When I'm out in India commenting on the IPL, I always point out the same thing." "Sometimes with Shubman, more so when you're sort of a little lacking in confidence and striving for things a little bit for your form, sometimes that front leg just pushes across a little bit too much," Knight told PTI.
"And that means rotating the body, getting to the ball, and playing around that front pad." "However, if I'm being brutally honest, I haven't seen that lately," he continued.
The former England opener cautioned Gill about the serious threat that left-handed bowlers might pose when coming over the wicket.
"...But it becomes more crucial when a left-armer is coming over the wicket and swinging it back into the pads. "That's something that he will probably be always aware of," Knight said.

'Line outside off stump a significant challenge'
One of the biggest difficulties in English red-ball cricket is batting, which is caused by the unique traits of the Dukes ball, the erratic weather patterns, and the peculiarities of the pitches.
Knight, who played 17 Test matches and 100 One-Day Internationals for England, said that most Indian top-order hitters would be cautious of the outside off-stump line.
"He concluded that all of these top-order players, especially those in England, will have a hard time with that line outside off stump again."
