The most thrilling traditional competition in recent memory, Norway Chess 2025, came to an end on Friday. After a significant blunder by D Gukesh, Magnus Carlsen, the defending champion, won his seventh Norway Chess championship as the Indian GM lost to Fabiano Caruana. As a consequence, Gukesh was unable to score three entire points in the last round and was forced to take third place.
D Gukesh found it challenging to play since Caruana had the early lead. Although Gukesh attempted a comeback, he was also running out of time. After that, he made a big mistake and realized right away that he had lost any chance of winning the championship.
The 18-year-old gave a handshake and seemed completely taken aback as he hid his face in his hands in anger, with only two seconds remaining.
With 15.5 points, Caruana came in second, while Gukesh finished third with 14.5 points. Carlsen finished the competition with 16 points, following his tie with Arjun Erigaisi, who came in fifth with 12.5 points.
The complete video of D. Gukesh's heartbreaking moment:
In the tournament, Gukesh applied pressure to his opponents until the very end, pushing them to make mistakes in time-pressure situations. During his match with Carlsen in Round 6, which the World witnessed, the incident took place. No. 1 lost, and as a result, he smashed his table in rage.
However, before Gukesh's last round match against Caruana, Viswanathan Anand provided Gukesh with some guidance, and it seems that the chess master was correct. He lauded Gukesh's strategy of performing badly and then applying time pressure to his opponents during a conversation. However, Anand believed that it could put him in a disadvantageous situation.
"Both of these games he played (against Carlsen and Erigaisi) were played terribly. I'd be concerned if that was a deliberate attempt to start a fight," he said.
"It tells me that he's an amazing fighter (and) at the same time, I would not be happy if he defended in this way," he continued.
