In the first Test of the five-match series against England, which was played at Headingley, Leeds, on Tuesday, India, led by Shubman Gill, suffered a five-wicket defeat. Because opening batter Ben Duckett scored 149 runs, the hosts were able to chase down 371. India may be held accountable for their own actions since England twice recovered in the game due to the lower-middle order. India lost its last seven wickets in the first innings for 41 runs, and its last six wickets in the second innings for 31 runs.

India had the opportunity to put England out of the game in both innings, but England was able to rebound thanks to a poor performance from its lower order. Ultimately, this error turned out to be expensive, as England took a 1-0 lead in the five-game series.

India appeared poised to score between 550 and 600 runs in the first innings, but a terrible collapse saw Gill and his teammates bowled out for 471. In a similar vein, India would have intended to establish a target of over 420 against England in the second innings, but the home team only had to chase 371 after losing a number of wickets in a row.

The majority of the online discussion has centered on India's lack of a tail and how the lower order consistently fails to produce runs when the squad needs them the most. The popular depiction of India's batting also caused former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik to speak out, much to the amusement of Ian Ward and Michael Atherton, during Day 5 of the first Test.

Dinesh Karthik told Sky Sports Cricket on the same subject, "I just saw on Twitter with someone saying the Indian batting is like a dobermann dog."

"The head is good, the middle portion is okay, but there is no tail at all," he continued.

Jasprit Bumrah has a rare off day at the office

Jasprit Bumrah, who returned with five wickets in the first innings, had a rare bad day at the office as he failed to take a single wicket in the second innings.

Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur returned with two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja took one. After the loss, Shubman Gill was once again asked about Bumrah's role in the series. It has already been made clear that the speedster would just be playing three Tests in the series against England.

Speaking about the same, Gill said. “It's definitely more game by game, you know there's a good break after the Test match, so once we're close to the match we'll see,” said Gill.

India and England will now square off in the second Test, beginning July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
