Dilip Vengsarkar Questions Shubman Gill’s Ability to Surpass Don Bradman’s Record
4 months ago | 5 Views
Shubman Gill is now at a point where every run he makes might make him a star, and this is only his first Test series as captain. In just two Tests, Gill has scored 565 runs, including two centuries and a double-hundred, breaking numerous records and setting his sights on many more, with the late, great Donald Bradman's massive total of 974 runs—the most ever in a series—serving as the holy grail. During his marathon innings of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, Gill broke several records, including the most runs scored by an Indian in the first two Tests of a series and the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain. But there are still two milestones to overcome: Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman with 771. And because he is in such good shape, it is only a matter of time before he gets there, unless something goes horribly wrong.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar thinks it's too soon to say if Gill will ever accomplish the great Bradman Everest, which requires 390 more runs. The Colonel has a sliver of doubt in Gill's potential, but Vengsarkar, who understands a thing or two about scoring a Test century at Lord's, is confident in the skipper's capacity.
"He's in excellent shape and a terrific batter. I'm hoping he does that. He has a chance, but I'm not sure if he will take it. I believe he ought to do it because he is in excellent condition. But chasing a personal achievement is not what matters. Because we are overly focused on personal accomplishments, which is bad. The main thing is to win games for our nation. That is what counts. PTI quoted Vengsarkar as saying that the ultimate analysis comes down to the effect of innings or a spell.
"He performed admirably as a captain and a batter; it was crucial that he score runs in order to be able to call the shots and lead from the front, which is very important, and he has done so. He has a lot of experience playing. During his time in England, he demonstrated his ability as a world-class batter.
Shubman Gill has the support of Sunil Gavaskar
However, Gavaskar is more optimistic about Gill's chances of surpassing his record than Vengsarkar. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in four Tests against the formidable West Indies during India's 1970/71 visit to the West Indies for his first series. Actually, The Little Master thinks that the sacred ground of the Lord's could very well be the place where Gill joins Indian folklore as a larger component.
Gavaskar told Sports Today, "I believe it will most likely occur at Lord's. And truly a worthy contender because of the purity of technique in his batting." The book contains every one of his photos. Additionally, he has a fantastic chance to take on the task of playing in the manner that the squad requires. Hence, it's obvious that records are meant to be broken. I would be thrilled for another SG to surpass that record.
