Karun Nair, who is gearing up for a possible comeback to India's Test XI after eight long years, acknowledges that his road has been anything but easy. Nair's tale is one of uncommon mental, from the dizzying high of scoring a triple hundred in only his third Test to years of disappointment and self-doubt.

Nair identified the "end of 2022" as the hardest period of his life, one that had a lasting impact, even if his successful streak in domestic cricket has lately reestablished him as a candidate. It was at this moment that Nair shared a heartfelt message on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, asking the sport to "give [him] another chance." At the time, Karnataka, his former state side, had removed him from teams for every format.

"I would argue that at the end of 2022, it was a rather gloomy spot in terms of events. A particularly poignant moment for me. I believe I'm going through the most challenging time. Nair stated to R Ashwin in a discussion on the spinner's YouTube channel that it was even harder than 2018 or whenever that was.

Since his memorable knock against England in Chennai in 2016, Nair has frequently been on the fringes, even though he is still just the second Indian batsman, after Virender Sehwag, to score a Test triple century. Although that knock is still a career-defining moment, it did little to guarantee his spot in the lineup.

"I honestly couldn't tell what was going on. Nair remembered, "I think the next series was in Sri Lanka in 2017, after the Australia series, after the 300 in Chennai." "I wasn't part of that squad either." After that, I was unable to comprehend what was going on. Then I had to return to playing domestic cricket.

"I have no idea what happened."

He still has the impression that a single excellent series could have altered everything.

"I had no idea what was going on. My only knowledge was that my name was absent. "I couldn't understand how it wasn't there," he stated.

"However, if I reflect on it, I might say, 'yes, I didn't get too many opportunities,' from one perspective." Alternatively, I could consider the four innings I played against Australia, in which I had a few good beginnings. Perhaps I wouldn't be in this situation or have had to experience that if I had simply turned those starts into higher scores.

Nair has a new point of view now.

“No. I don't want to be where I was a couple of years ago, quite honestly,” he stated. “I think at the moment, at least I am very grateful. As you mentioned, I've moved beyond the lamenting phase. I treat each day as a gift and live my life doing what I love, and I am incredibly thankful to be in my current position.

"I am really thankful to everyone who has contributed to my journey over the past two to three years, at the very least. I've learned to cherish each moment and treat every day as a fresh start.

Nair is on the verge of redemption with a potential spot in India's lineup for the first Test against England in Leeds on Friday.
