Deshaun Watson Massage Joke Sparks Buzz at ESPYs 2025

The ESPYs 2025, which Shane Gillis hosted, may have received conflicting reviews, but his humor throughout the ceremony has been unmistakable, even if some may see it as contentious.

At the ESPN-organized award event, no one, from Jeffrey Epstein to Caitlin Clark, appeared to be immune to Gillis' rapier wit. The host also made fun of NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Deshaun Watson joke explained

When Deshaun Watson receives a massage, they say, "Put your hands where my eyes can see," said Gillis.

Watson's initial charge of sexual harassment was filed in March 2021, for those who are unfamiliar. According to the complaint, Watson sexually assaulted her during a massage session. The following month, 22 other women accused him of treating them in the same manner.

Nonetheless, the majority of these claims were resolved by Watson.

Mixed opinions exist about Shane Gillis.

In spite of Gillis's best efforts, his opening speech elicited a range of responses.

On social media, opinions on Gillis' performance were split, with some calling it "hilarious" and others "cringey." He got a few laughs when he made the joke about Caitlin Clark, but others appeared uneasy.

"I see a lot of you don't like me, and that's OK," Gillis told the audience before he finished his speech. For me, that's all. Everything turned out exactly as we predicted it would. I have no idea why this transpired.

Winners of the ESPY

Former US Open tennis champion Sloane Stephens and the Indianapolis Colts were among the winners at the 11th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards.

The Colts were selected as the team of the year because of their Kicking the Stigma campaign, which aimed to increase mental health awareness and improve access to care.

The Muhammad Ali award was given to Stephens for her namesake foundation, which aims to promote tennis inclusivity by providing children with access, representation, and support both on and off the court. She defeated Alex Ovechkin, the star of the Washington Capitals, and CJ McCollum, the Washington Wizards guard.

The Sports Philanthropist of the Year was billionaire Michele Kang, who owns the Washington Spirit of the NWSL. The Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award was given to former MLB player and executive Billy Bean on Wednesday night.
