D Gukesh left Magnus Carlsen stunned on Sunday during their Round 6 match, as the 18-year-old GM pulled off a surprising victory against the World No. 1 at Norway Chess 2025. Although the Indian GM found himself in a losing position, a significant blunder by Carlsen allowed him to capitalize in the endgame and secure his first classical win over the Norwegian.

After Gukesh's victory, his grandfather Shankar Rajesh expressed his joy about the outcome. In an interview with ANI, he stated, "This is one of the major accomplishments he hadn't achieved before, and now he has. Gukesh has beaten Magnus Carlsen as well. There’s no pressure on him now."

The match spanned 62 moves and lasted over four hours, with Carlsen suffering a defeat to the reigning World Champion. Gukesh's supporters were thrilled that he finally triumphed over Carlsen, who had previously criticized the quality of his World Championship win against Ding Liren.

The victory also prompted Carlsen to slam his table in frustration after losing to Gukesh, although he did shake hands with the Indian GM afterward. Defending Carlsen's reaction, Rajesh commented, "That’s natural."

"He’ll be relaxed and will be practicing."

He also mentioned that he hasn’t talked to Gukesh yet, as they avoid disturbing him during tournaments.

Having lost to Carlsen in the opening round, this win served as sweet revenge for Gukesh. He is currently in third place with 8.5 points, just one point behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana.

Praising Gukesh, his coach Grzegorz Gajewski remarked, "This win gives a huge boost of confidence to Gukesh because once you’ve done it, you know you can do it again. And that’s the plan."

"And for the upcoming tournament (Norway Chess), it gives him a lift. Hopefully, we can break another unbreakable barrier. Perfect," he added.
