D Gukesh pulled off a surprising comeback by beating Magnus Carlsen in their Round 6 match at Norway Chess 2025. He was behind in the endgame but made a key move after Carlsen blundered. Both players ended up in a tight time scramble, adding to the drama. Carlsen was so upset he slammed the table, then shook Gukesh’s hand calmly. As he left, Carlsen patted the Indian grandmaster on the back. The game went 62 moves and lasted over four hours.
For the first time, Carlsen secured a classical win in the tournament. After the game, India’s 33rd GM Vishnu Prasanna, who used to coach Gukesh, praised the world champion.
He told ANI, "Carlsen isn’t competing in this cycle anymore, but people still see him as number one. Gukesh needs to beat Carlsen to prove himself too. Besides the World Champion, he wants to be the best."
When asked about Carlsen’s table-slamming, Vishnu said, "That’s happened a few times. The game was tense with many ups and downs. Carlsen was probably frustrated with his mistakes. It was just a lot of passion."
Gukesh now sits third in the standings with 8.5 points. He is just one point behind Carlsen and Caruana. This match was a comeback for Gukesh, who lost to Carlsen in the first round.
On Sunday, Caruana beat Hikaru Nakamura with a black draw in armageddon. Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi took advantage of a mistake by Wei Yi to win with White.
