Norway, Stavanger: Gukesh D defeated the globe in traditional chess for the first time in a dramatic turn of circumstances when Magnus Carlsen snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Sunday saw an exciting conclusion to the sixth round of Norway Chess, placing it at number one.

The reigning world champion, playing white, was on the defensive for the majority of the fight until a late mistake by the Norwegian, with both players under intense time constraints, turned the tables. Carlsen quit after slamming his fist on the table, which caused the remaining pieces to tremble and move.

Gukesh exited in a daze, stunned and shaken by what had just occurred. After falling to the Norwegian in the first round here, he was on the verge of suffering a second defeat in a week at the hands of the man who many believe to be the greatest player in the world in their rematch. The 19-year-old Indian, however, demonstrated his mindset and tenacity in the face of tremendous adversity, making a strong statement as the world champion.

"What means the most to me right now is that I didn't lose the game," Gukesh said on the official Norway Chess broadcast. "However, defeating Magnus in any way is unique."

Gukesh went from battling, losing, clinging on, and, somehow, winning. Although the mistake by the late Carlsen was crucial, Gukesh just wouldn't give up.

"Well, we might call it fortunate," said Grzegorz Gajewski, Gukesh's coach, in response to reporters' questions. "But we have to give a lot of credit to Guki for his tenacity and ingenuity."

In Norway Chess, this was the second consecutive year that an Indian has triumphed over Carlsen in classical format. In classical chess, R Praggnanandhaa beat the world's top player for the first time ever last year. Despite the fact that he could hardly accept it minutes later, Gukesh has followed suit.

Since becoming world champion, Gukesh has struggled with inconsistent form, and even in this competition so far, he only had one classical victory prior to this match. "Hopefully, this win gives him a bump," Gajewski remarked.
