Since 2018, Charles "Peanut" Tillman, a former cornerback for the Chicago Bears, has been employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The former two-time Pro Bowler, who once ruled the game, has switched careers and is now actively involved in law enforcement.
"Legendary Chicago #Bears cornerback Charles "Peanut" Tillman is now an FBI AGENT," read a social media message from ML Football announcing the 44-year-old's startling career shift.
Charles ‘Peanut’ Tillman’s stellar NFL career
Tillman played cornerback for the Bears for 12 years after being selected in the second round of the 2003 NFL draft. In 2015, he transferred to the Carolina Panthers for a short one-year stint. He assisted the Bears in making it to Super Bowl XLI during his tenure (2006 season), but he saw the Colts defeat them in the second quarter.
His capacity to bounce back from blunders earned him such a reputation in the league that the NFL included the "Peanut Punch" as a reminder to GMs and head coaches during that period, even though the cup wasn't intended for him. He was unable to participate in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos due to a minor ailment he suffered in 2015.
Tillman decided to give up his career and $50 million in profits, along with a Walter Payton Man of the Year award from 2013 in honor of his community service, rather than the Vince Lombardi Trophy, because of his father's time in the US Army as a sergeant.
When and how did he make the switch to the FBI?
Tillman enrolled in a 20-week training academy in Quantico, Virginia, established by the FBI, after quitting the sport. He only had till February 23, 2018, when he turned 37, to get his badge and pass the course, even if the details of his employment are still unclear.
Tillman's efforts were clearly not in vain, since the Chicago rapper Lil Reese was astonished to see Tillman as a member of the police convoy that raided his house in 2018. Lil Reese told VladTV, "I was tapping my homie, 'Ain't this the football player?' And then I said, 'What's up, aren't you Charles Tillman?'" And he said, "What's up
Given Tillman's criminal justice degree from Louisiana-Lafayette and his meticulous observation of law enforcement officials during offseason breaks, as reported by ESPN, several sources said that they were not surprised by the revelation.
