Chargers’ RB Najee Harris Hurt Eye; Impact on Team’s Play

When it was recently revealed that Najee Harris, their running back, had a fireworks incident on the Fourth of July that impacted his eye, the Los Angeles Chargers escaped a potentially devastating blow to their rushing attack for this season. His agent, Doug Hendrickson, spoke with ESPN on Thursday, July 10, and confirmed what had initially been fan conjecture.

The wound suffered by Najee Harris

According to Hendrickson's interview with ESPN on Thursday, a fireworks incident on the Fourth of July in Antioch, California, resulted in a "superficial" eye injury for Najee Harris. According to ESPN, Harris was one of the fortunate ones as "a mishap resulted to injuries to several attendees," one of whom is currently in the hospital due to the loss of all of his fingers in the incident.

Before playing his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris had previously signed a one-year contract with the Chargers in March.

What effect will this have on the Chargers?

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the injury is far more severe than initially thought, even though Harris's agent described it as "superficial" during an interview on the NFL Network.

"From my understanding of where he stands, he's not expected to miss significant time," Ian Rapoport said. "Now, there was a fireworks incident. It does seem that there has been some harm. Doug Hendrickson, his agent, used the term "superficial." However, if I understood correctly, he will be on the field sooner rather than later and is not anticipated to miss any games.

In what seemed to be an incredibly terrifying, frightening circumstance, some of Najee Harris's friends were certainly less fortunate. In particular, Harris's wounds are thought to be rather mild. He should be back on the field shortly," he said.

Given Harris is only expected to get a slow start in training camp, he won’t be missing any games as a result of his injury. This means that the chargers might be compelled to rely heavily on first-round rookie Omarion Hampton until Harris is fully back in the game.
