Chappell to Gill: India Can Win Without Bumrah – They've Done It Before

Due to workload management, Jasprit Bumrah would only participate in three of the five Tests during India's Test tour of England, according to head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. In the first Test at Headingley, the star pacer was a member of the playing XI, but he was subsequently rested for the second game at Edgbaston. For the third test at Lord's, he rejoined the starting XI.
Despite Bumrah writing his name on the honors board upon his return at the Lord's Test, it was insufficient since England were able to win the game and are now leading the series 2-1.
Jasprit Bumrah was not present when India won the second Test
If India wants to equalize the situation, the presence of the MI star will be essential. However, Gambhir and his crew will be aware that they triumphed in the second Test without Bumrah and in great manner, with significant performances coming from players like Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep.
Greg Chappell expressed similar thoughts in his piece for ESPNcricinfo and offered some counsel to India captain Shubman Gill.
"And a word about Bumrah: the fixation on whether or not he plays misses the point. India have triumphed in several recent Tests even without him. Collective performance, not individual talent, is what matters. A team wins when everyone performs their responsibilities. The captain makes sure that every player understands the plan and is dedicated to it with confidence. “That’s the formula,” he stated.
"This is Gill's chance to establish his authority if he wants to be a great Test captain. With his leadership, not just with the bat. Establish the benchmark. Demand it from others. Choose your team. Support them. Also, see that all men are aware of the expectations and hold them to them.
"Because cricket is ultimately not about heroes. It's all about collaboration. It's all about teams. It's also about captains who get the most out of their team.
"If Gill can lead with clarity of thought and strength of purpose, he will not only influence this series, but also the future of Indian cricket," he said.
India will attempt to tie the series in the fourth Test, which is set to start on July 23 in Manchester. They are finished and dusted if they lose their next game. However, a triumph would pave the way for a thrilling conclusion to the series in the last encounter.
