Carlos Alcaraz Steps Into His Signature Greatness

New Delhi: Tennis enthusiasts worldwide were recently transported back to the age of the Big Four, when Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray dominated the courts with grace, composure, and elegance. The French Open took place a few days ago.

Out of the four, Djokovic is the only one who is still performing well. The others have waved goodbye to the game. However, their consistency is the main reason we remember their every move. They managed to shine year after year, week after week. Knowing how to save their energy during the first week of the Grand Slam was crucial to their success, as they would all undoubtedly enter cruise mode. They hardly ever failed.

One can't help but compare if anyone now has aspirations of emulating their accomplishments. There is where Carlos Alcaraz consistently demonstrates that he is his own man.

In the second round on Wednesday at Court Philippe-Chatrier, the No. 2 seed defeated the formidable Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, but the way he won might have been a reflection of his young age.

The 22-year-old quickly finished the first set before encountering a motivated Marozsán on the other side of the net in the second. Alcaraz's play fell somewhat, but the Hungarian improved his level. However, that is precisely what makes seeing any Alcaraz game so special—he has a tendency to be far more erratic than the Big Four, but when he does, he's a joy to watch.

After the victory, Alcaraz was interviewed on the court by Mats Wilander, who asked him if he always enjoyed himself while playing.

"Most of the time (laughs). You know, there are occasions when it's hard to enjoy yourself on the court; I had to endure. The Spaniard said that it also depends on the competition.

"However, I'm usually attempting to focus solely on having fun playing and being on this sort of court."

“Since the Philippe-Chatrier is such a lovely court, I have to enjoy it as soon as I get on it. Simply trying to play well and make the audience enjoy watching my games. That's how I like to play tennis.

His showmanship was on full display in the two shots around the net post, the manner in which he walked the court, and his approach to the audience. All you can do when the Spaniard is firing on all cylinders is hope that he runs out of petrol. At that moment, there is no way to compare him.

Although the scoreline in the last two sets was 6-1, 6-2, it may appear that Marozsán performed poorly, but it was all Alcaraz, who took the chances and made it happen. Although the fearlessness of his play contrasts with the Big Four's cool tactical effectiveness, it is helping him establish a Grand Slam record that others would envy.

Alcaraz said, "(I am) simply really pleased about refreshing my mind, and I began the third set really, really well and finished up playing very well in the final two sets."

"I didn't feel like I lost my focus at all." He simply played a lot better. I believe that I simply maintain my level throughout the game today. However, he played at a far higher standard than I did in the second set.

Alcaraz has a higher win percentage in Grand Slams than only four other players: Bjorn Borg (141-17, 89.2%), Djokovic (383-52, 88%), Nadal (314-44, 87.7%), and Federer (369-60 (86%)). It's still early in his career, but one might assume that he will only improve from here.

Alcaraz is currently attempting to be the first man since Rafael Nadal in 2019–20 to win the Paris championship. He will next face Damir Dzumhur. Alcaraz has a 29-2 record on clay since May 2024, which demonstrates that the Alcaraz way is also the way to go, but it doesn't yet make him as feared as Nadal. And there is no need for us to inform him of this. He is aware.
