Birmingham Test Preview: England’s Dilemma—Containing the Enigmatic Rishabh Pant
5 months ago | 5 Views
At Headingley in Leeds, Rishabh Pant was in record-breaking form, even if his twin centuries may have occurred in a losing cause. Pant had arrived in England and was in the zone, ready to do his thing and score runs at will on these tracks, as evidenced by a pair of centuries, one of which was an amazing 118 in the second innings.
Pant was occasionally difficult to bowl to due to his ability to move between gears with ease and turn a strong defense into the type of offense that had the opposition perplexed. Chris Woakes, a seasoned seamer for England, concurred, saying that England's main objective was to devise a strategy to combat India's prolific keeper-batter.
Prior to the Edgbaston Test match, Woakes stated at his press conference, "Rishabh is a player who you don't really know what's coming next. He's a player who keeps you on your toes as a bowler, which is sometimes exciting to bowl against.” The seamer lauded the positive effect that someone like Pant may have on Test cricket, but added, "But sometimes, he can put you on the back foot as a bowler." He advances the game. When he's at the crease, it's thrilling to be a part of the game.

England has not yet addressed its strategy for combating Pant.
Woakes acknowledged that England needed to sit down and consider as a group how to counter the kind of threat that Pant represents, which has the potential to steal the game from any opponent if given the right base, taking into account their previous experiences and identifying areas where they may make a difference.
"But look, he played really well, took a few risks, and came off after scoring two hundreds, clearly up at Headingley. We hope to be able to pick him up a little sooner this week. The fast bowler said, "I don't think we've really met up yet, but I'm sure we'll have some discussions around some of the players that we came up against last week and how we can bowl at them a little bit better."
Woakes, the senior member of England's bowling assault, will attempt to bring his eight through in Birmingham after a fairly calm performance in Leeds, as the hosts attempt to extend an early 1-0 lead.
