Behind the RCB IPL Tragedy: A Search for Accountability

Behind the RCB IPL Tragedy: A Search for Accountability

In cricket, death is frequently employed as a metaphor. At the time of the death, bowling. Bringing an innings back to life. Returning from the grave. However, no one ever anticipates that it will cease to be a metaphor. The cricket community is speechless with amazement, grief, and even wrath when that occurs. However, the outpouring of fury and sorrow brought about by the deaths in the stampede-like incident during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's celebration event won't be witnessed by those who perished.

Perhaps the oddest two days in the history of any cricket squad or its supporters. There was an unparalleled high of happiness on June 3. June 4 was a day of unfathomable sadness.

Eleven fans will never again share a smile, a giggle, or a memory with their loved ones. They had attended the event in the hopes that it would be a continuation of the most wonderful day of their lives. Everyone who attended the event would have gone out to celebrate.

Everyone. That is the problem. ‘Everyone’ is a huge number when it comes to franchises like RCB.

Why such a rush to party?

The catastrophe raises several questions that must be addressed.

Who came up with the idea to hold a celebration that included the seething populace of a city, just 24 hours after a significant victory?

Did anyone not grasp the emotional significance of the triumph? After 18 years of near misses, RCB had finally won the IPL, despite having had the talent to go all the way on many occasions. They had grown to be the most popular punchline in jokes about the IPL trophy. It felt like salvation to really win it after that. It would have been twice as true for fans as it was for players. Following a disappointing season, the athletes are free to pack their belongings and go on to the next competition. Because it is their profession, they must compartmentalize in order to be successful. For 18 years, the fan has been holding the pain. Did anyone not anticipate an overwhelming display of support in the streets at the time?

Above all, why did the authorities in charge of logistics and security seem so blasé about allowing the event to happen, even if the franchise wanted to commemorate its inaugural triumph in that giddy burst? Why did they not argue more forcefully that it was impossible at such short notice? The celebration would have been postponed if the authorities had said "no."

At the very least, it would have let the first adrenaline rush subside. Even with improved planning and security, there would still have been huge crowds.

In the blame game that always follows a national catastrophe, the answers to these issues will be lost. Officials from the franchise, the event management firm, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association have already been detained or called for their arrest.

These bodies were undoubtedly involved in planning the event. However, was it possible for them to do it without permission?

The mob that carried out the lynch

Another consequence of any national tragedy is that there are always two tragedies instead of one. The sad incident itself is the first thing. A howling lynch mob online then demands ritual sacrifice in order to satiate their thirst for vengeance.

As a result, social media is buzzing with trends calling for Virat Kohli's arrest. You have editorials that urge that the families of victims be paid X or Y dollars. You have individuals advocating for the prohibition of RCB. I'm sure that none of those who make such absurd demands feel as much compassion for the victims as they do pleasure in bringing people down in support of their own agenda. Because how is Virat Kohli in any way accountable for any of the horrible happenings? How does prohibiting the franchise address the cause of the stampede and how to prevent it from happening again? How does an internet warrior sitting at home decide not only the amount of money that should be paid, but also who should be paying it?

The loss of life, the stampede, the injuries, and the trauma were all tragedies. It is crucial to hold individuals accountable for it. It's also crucial to refrain from blaming people who weren't directly involved in the choices that contributed to the tragedy.
