Barbados Test Drama: Repeated Third Umpire Mistakes Anger West Indies Camp

The Kensington Oval in Barbados is proving to be the setting for a gripping first Test between Australia and the West Indies. With 24 wickets falling over the course of the two days, the game is still in the balance. However, the focus has all been on third umpire Adrian Holdstock, who has been the key character in five contentious DRS choices. Since four of these judgements went against the West Indies camp, they may have reason to grumble.

Roston Chase, the captain of the West Indies, squeezed an in-seaming delivery from Josh Hazlewood towards fine leg for a single in the opening over of Day 2. Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, went upstairs because he believed the ball struck the pad first. Just before the ball made contact with Chase's bat, a spike appeared on the Ultraedge a frame.

But the guests were taken aback when the third umpire ruled that the ball hit the bat first and that it was not out. Hazlewood and Pat Cummins approached the on-field authorities right away to ask for an explanation.

The hosts were certainly shaken by another incident involving Windies captain Roston Chase over the next few overs. Pat Cummins bowled an unplayable ball, hitting the right-hander in the knee roll, and the umpire called LBW.

Chase went for a review, assuming he had insider knowledge. The Windies captain appeared to have gained an inside edge since the bat and pad were in close proximity. The West Indies dressing room was shocked, though, when the third umpire disagreed. It should be noted that the Ultraedge did not display any noticeable spike, given the proximity of the bat and pad.

Ian Bishop, a former West Indies pacer, voiced his rage at the choice, claiming that Holdstock made the incorrect choice. "I disagree with the choice." I disagree with the technology in place. I believed he struck that one. Although I feel bad for the referees there, in my opinion, that should not have been out. "Chase is perplexed," he said on the broadcast.

Former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite stated, "There are not many admirers of Adrian Holdstock inside the West Indies dressing room right now."

The drama continues

There was more to the play. Later in the afternoon session, West Indies batsman Shai Hope was forced to walk back after being caught out brilliantly by wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Nonetheless, the on-field referees submitted the decision to the third umpire since they were not happy with the Australians' performance.

Carey appeared to have grassed the ball on the turf in the slow-motion replays. But Holdstock once more disagreed.

Daren Sammy, the West Indies coach, was stunned. After hearing about Holdstock's decision, he raised his arms in rage. The spectators in Barbados were just as skeptical.

"Right now, the mood on the ground is a little bit elevated. It seems as though it is in contact with the earth. On commentary, former Australian batsman Greg Blewett said that he agrees with the West Indies dressing room's assessment that they believe they have been on the receiving end of some of the calls today.

The third umpire Holdstock again made a contentious judgement towards the end of Day 2, this time siding with Cameron Green as he lived through a near LBW appeal. The ball did make contact with the pad prior to the bat, according to replays. However, Holdstock disagreed once more and failed to call it out.

Travis Head narrowly defeated Shamar Joseph's delivery to Shai Hope on Day 1. The Windies fielder appeared to have made the catch without much question. But Head was able to continue on because Holdstock thought the ball landed short.

Regarding the first Test, Australia leads the hosts by 80 runs with a score of 92/4 in the second innings. On 13 and 19, respectively, Travis Head and Beau Webster are undefeated for the visitors.
